Dexter De Vera
founder
A serendipitous moment when Dexter had to step out of his shared hotel room so his friend/business partner can privately use the bathroom during a business trip in the Philippines back in 2014. Dexter went to the lobby and met the receptionist Jeasa and was inspired by her story. The short conversation led to meeting her younger sister Gia, a struggling second year student at Polytechnic University of the Philippines. Gia shared her dream of finishing school and someday become a lawyer was in jeopardy due to financial and emotional reasons. Jeasa’s determination and hard work to put her younger sister to school reminded Dexter of his late father, Tom B. De Vera Jr. and how he helped his brother Manny achieve his Masters degree in Linguistics at Ateneo De Manila University. While Jeasa and Tom shared a common goal in helping others first, that act of kindness is what inspired Dexter to continue to help others in any way he can. In 2017, Gia’s dream became a reality when she graduated with a Bachelors degree in Philosophy with accolades including President’s Lister, Best in Academic Performance, Outstanding AB Philosophy Senior and Best Thesis Awardee. Dexter felt the connection to his late father when Gia shared her story on Facebook knowing that he had a little contribution to her success story. The gratification knowing that Dexter made a difference is what made him collaborate with other passionate experts in the field of Philanthropy and that was the beginning of Wishery.

Al J, as his family and friends fondly call him, is the eldest son of Alfonso and Edita. Born and raised in the Philippines. From his childhood ambition to become a lawyer and run as President for the Country, he shifted his passion and direction to healthcare and decided to go to school to become a Respiratory Therapist.
Largely influenced by his father, Al J always believed in the wisdom he shared to him while growing up and put into heart two lessons in life: (1) Your family will ALWAYS be there for you; (2) Always put RESPECT in your last name and never do anything that will tarnish or ruin your family’s legacy. Because of this positive upbringing, he is eager to start a family with his wife, Marianne. “I want to be a dad so I can teach my child what my father has taught me. I’m really grateful for my loving wife who is my real happiness…she is very supportive and caring. I’m truly blessed to have her. She’s my world. I never thought that I will find someone meant for me.”
As with most Filipino-American who immigrated to the U.S., there is always a story of triumph and tragedy. It wasn’t always smooth sailing for Al J. As a matter of fact, he had so many ups and downs, failures and success before reaching this point in his life and career. But nothing comes close to the devastation he felt when he lost his bestfriend from an untimely passing. This moment in his life wretched him. He battled a lot of demons and numbed his pain during the lengthy grieving process. When asked what he did to overcome this difficult moment in life, Al J shared: “To always have faith in the Lord up above. He will never give you a challenge you can’t overcome. These challenges make you a better individual. Always have faith in Him.”
Today, Al J is the proud part owner of Beacon Hospice Care, Angelino Hospice Care, Ocean View Hospice Care, and Dignity Palliative and Hospice Care to which he gave a shout out to all his hardworking and loyal staff: “I’m very proud of every single member of my staff/work family. Without them I won’t be where I am in my life right now.” When asked about his definition of success, Al J didn’t hesitate to share his thoughts: “Success is when you wake up everyday ready and willing to face the challenges the world is throwing at you whatever that may be. Once you have that mindset then you know you’re in the right track for success.”
Winston Churchill once said, we make a living by what we get but we make a life by what we give. Al J has lived all his life giving back to those around him his compassion, generosity and honor. Always committing to helping and serving the community. “Helping the community doesn’t have to be over the top. It can be as simple as giving a homeless person a hot meal or a blanket. What’s important is that you do something for the community.
